7 Common Fitness Mistakes

Published over 2 years ago • 1 min read

Reader,

Can you relate to any of these?

If yes, reply back with which one(s). You can say "Number ___" for example and even elaborate on it. If you'd like help with these challenges or others, let me know in the email and I'll see how I can help.

Mistake #1 - Trying To Be Perfect

Your diet, workout, or life will never be “perfect.” Perfectionism is often a crippling trait that stems from fear. Focus on consistency and "messy" action instead.⠀

Mistake #2 - Too Much Volume Per Workout

This one really connects with me, as my beginner-self overdid this in a major way. Work on MED (Minimal Effective Dose).

Try to milk as much benefit out of as little volume as you can, and then add from there. 10-20 total sets in a strength workout is typically a good range for most people, and you can even do less if your goals are more about simply moving and building a habit. Sometimes I'll just do a few sets and call it a great day.

Mistake #3 - Eating Way Too Much or Way Too Little

To lose fat, you need to be in a calorie deficit. A slight deficit will be easier to sustain and will preserve maximum muscle. To gain muscle, you need to be in a surplus. Too many calories and you’ll be gaining unnecessary chunk.

Mistake #4 - Focusing On Supplements Over Food

Supplements can be a helpful tool (they are a tool) to aid in performance and health. But regular food and nutrition are #1 by a landslide. If your nutrition is out of whack or you have an unhealthy relationship with food, supplements are the last thing you need to worry about.

Mistake #5 - Unrealistic Expectations

Transformations don’t happen overnight. Nothing great happens easily. Be patient and consistent, and success will come.⠀

Mistake #6 - Not Lifting Heavy Enough

“Toning” is not achieved by doing 150 reps of curls with 2 pound dumbbells. Challenging yourself with weight (provided your form is on point) is how you build a strong and firm body. Don’t be a wimp. Push yourself… a lot.

Mistake #7 - Trying to Lose Fat With Ab Exercises

Write this down and memorize it. You cannot spot reduce fat. Ab exercises will not burn belly fat. Never, ever, ever. Calorie deficit is the only way.

Best,

Harris

P.S.

Hope these help and please reply with which you're struggling with. Ask how I can help and I hope I can!

Ideally, we'd all have a clear purpose behind our fitness. We’d have clear goals and a direct plan to get there. But nothing is ever ideal and sometimes our “why” seems hard to grasp. I've learned that sometimes, the goal can simply be to show up daily. Knowing that fitness is a tool to create a better life, do it daily and see the effects. When you’re not sure why you should train, know that training daily can enhance everything else in your day. Other “why’s” may emerge from there. Hope...

Fitness is what you make it. Being fit has many meanings. Physically, it includes strength, mobility, conditioning and more. How you improve these attributes is more or less up to you. There are foundational principles and methods to build fitness, but there is not just one way to go about it. Some people are drawn to weightlifting sport. Some people, triathlon type training. Some, calisthenics. The list goes on. There's always a way to make fitness fun. Absolutely hate exercising indoors?...
